Follow Jim Harmer’s Mystery Trip 2017

Several months ago, Jim asked me to come up with a Mystery trip location.   I booked him a flight to a different country without telling him where he's going.  I had to keep a poker face while recording a podcast with him a few weeks ago.  His wife, Emily, also had a tough time keeping it a secret but she never gave any hints.

Today he got to the airport with a manilla envelope I'd prepared for him with his flight details.  He read his ticket information to find out where he is going (he was SUPER excited!).

Each day, Jim will send me a photo that I'll post here with a cryptic clue as to where he is photographing this week.  Post your comments and thoughts and anything you notice in the photos right in the comments and we'll see how long it takes us to figure it out!

He's using a beta copy of the Really Good Photo Spots app to find his spots, and is recording a series of videos for the Improve Photography Youtube channel which will be released after the trip.

  1. I’m sticking with Norway! And if it is, I can’t wait to see and read all about Jim’s adventures!

  2. No idea. But if you assume 9 hours from Omaha on a jet at let’s say 400 mph it could be anywhere from Iceland to Canada to South America. He’s done Iceland a bunch of time, that would be boring. Alaska, Greenland, Canada are so northern hemisphere! Given the planner’s imagination I’ll guess S America…. Chile????

  3. It looks like Jim has moved a bit and is at lake Nigardbrevatnet in Luster and that you see the Nigardsbreen glacier in the background. Hope he got a trip on the glacier.

  4. Hey guys, I was wanting to ask you if any of you have heard of a new photo editing program called Affinity Photo. It’s been out on mac for a while and looks to be very close to photoshops capabilities. They also just released it on iOS for the iPad Pro line and I’m trying it out right now. I was wondering if any of the IP writers might be able to take a look at the program for mac and maybe even iOS.

  5. Europe could be a good match for the flight duration, i agree. E.g. Denver-Frankfurt as a main leg. Continuing from there you would have to go above 2000…2100m to find residual snow (looking for alternatives to Norway or Greenland…) Cabins like that you might find in Switzerland.

  6. That cabin is sweet! I love the roof!! I’m sticking with my second guess, for now… somewhere in Southern Norway.

  7. Just three days? Did Jim get lost? Abducted by aliens? Or am I supposed to follow along somewhere else?

    1. Make sure to check out the podcast, we announced the location during that episode.
