Canon PowerShot SX730 Digital Camera w/40x Optical Zoom & 3 Inch Tilt LCD - Wi-Fi, NFC, & Bluetooth Enabled (Black)
Our rating:

Here’s a great camera from Cannon, a great brand for cameras.

It’s a little on the pricey side, but it comes packed with features, and eager photographers will get some great shots with it.

It’s got that all important flip screen, which turns up a full 180 degrees so you can check how you look before you take your selfie. In addition to turning it up, you can also turn it downward too, up to 90 degrees. Plenty of angles to experiment with.

The other feature that makes it really good for selfies is it’s Smooth Skin effect, designed to enhance your natural features, in what it refers to as it’s Self Portrait mode.

We love it’s customizable self-timer, it gives you enough time to smile, fix your pout, or invite a friend in for the shot.

What makes it that bit better than your standard flip screen camera, is it’s 40x optical zoom. Optical zoom is favored by many photographers because it gives you a better quality picture than digital zoom.

You also get great image resolution on your selfies with this beauty, since it offers 20.3 Megapixels altogether.

We love that it has built in Wi-Fi2 and bluetooth technology, so you can upload straight to social media without being near your home computer.

Despite it’s large sensor size, it packs away really neat and compactly, a camera you can take anywhere.

We also love how you can use it to make 1080p Full HD Video in mp4 format, for when a still is not enough.

We like the geotag and date stamp options, so you can log your journeys. Great for uploading onto Flickr.

Pros
  • Great brand
  • 180 degree flip screen
  • Smooth Skin effect
  • Customizable self-timer
  • 40x optical zoom
  • Fantastic 20.3 Megapixel resolution
  • Built in Wi-Fi2 and bluetooth
  • Large sensor
  • Very compact
  • Make 1080p Full HD Video
  • Geotag and date stamp options
Cons
  • Premium product at a premium price

Our rating:

Now this is a camera for those of us who take their photography seriously.

It comes from a great brand, Nikon, and is well loved by customers.

It’s LCD preview screen is 3.2 inches, slightly bigger than standard preview screens, and it swivels a full 180 degrees, so you can see exactly how you look in your selfie before you take your snap. You see exactly what the camera sees.

It has a 24.2-megapixel image sensor for capturing in astounding precision and clarity, for those true to life details.

It’s wifi enabled so you can send your selfies straight to your smartphone or tablet. Emailing, texting and posting to social media is no problem.

We love it’s autofocus system, which allows you to lock onto what part of the image you want to focus on, and make it more clear and precise.

It even makes action shots easy to pull off, thanks to the feature whereby you hold down the shutter button to take stills at 5 frames per second. Never miss a beat.

As it’s a DSLR you can get more out of it than a standard point and shoot camera (more on that in our buying guide).

We love how it has built in GPS, for super accurate geotagging.

If you want you can also purchase extra accessories like special lenses.

Best Camera for Selfies – Buyers Guide

This buying guide assumes that you don’t have someone with you to take your picture, and that you’ll be taking your selfie independently.

To that end, unless you want to take all of your selfies in front of a mirror with the camera in the shot, this buyer's guide will assume you’re going to use a flip screen camera.

A preview screen that you can angle as you please is ideal, whether you want a selfie with your pet on the floor, or if you want to raise it high for a group shot.

For the purpose of brevity, this buying guide also assumes that you want to go for a digital camera. After all, what good is your selfie if you can’t post it to social media online?

Types of flip screen camera

For those who are relatively new to photography, you might like to invest in a point and shoot camera. They’re super easy to use because they automatically optimize the camera setting to get the best shot, doing all the hard work for you. Although they tend to be quite small in size, you can still get great image quality with a point and shoot camera.

For more advanced photographers at the other end of the spectrum, there are DSLR cameras. DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex. A DSLR camera that combines the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor.

With a DSLR, you can play around with the camera settings and change lenses as you see fit. The downside is that they tend to be a little more bulky and heavy.

Mirrorless cameras meanwhile tend to offer the best of both worlds. Mirrorless cameras do away with all the mirrors that are found inside the body of a DSLR, making them more compact, but they still support interchangeable lenses.

Flip Screen Size

Generally speaking, the bigger the flip screen size the better, as it’s designed to be a preview screen, showing you exactly what your finished photo will look like.

Most flip screen cameras will have a flip screen size of 3 inches, so it is our recommendation that you don’t settle for anything less than that.

Sensor Size

As with flip screen size, it’s a case of the bigger the better. You typically want to capture as much as possible and include hints of your surroundings if you’re out enjoying the outdoors or lapping it up on holiday for example.

Furthermore, the greater the sensor size, the more light is let in which in turn leads to a better, clearer picture.

Weight of Camera

Some professional cameras can be big and bulky, but that’s not much good when you’re out taking selfies on the go. You need a camera that you can hold in your hand and one that’s sufficiently portable to be taken anywhere you happen to be.

No one likes to lug heavy equipment around with them.

A point and shoot camera is a good idea in this respect, as they tend to be smaller.

Lenses

Built in lenses can be great, but if you wanted to take your photography a step further, you might like to invest in a camera with additional focus and zooming capability as well.

Other Features

Stills can be great but video can show so much more. For Youtubers or vloggers a good flip screen can replace your original camera for your videos or tutorials. And you don’t need to rely on your phone to upload videos to Instagram, you can upload from your PC or Mac too.

If this might be something of interest to you further down the line, you’ll need to ensure that your camera has a compatible external microphone.

Budget

Last but not least is price. Digital cameras with flip screens can vary quite considerably in price, with the bigger name brands costing way more than their lesser known alternatives. But on the flip side, if you buy from a good brand, you're paying for unequivocal quality.
