Jim: 5 Things I Learned This Week

  • Difference last trip to this one.  WAY better pictures.
  • The AF on the Sony A6300 is not as fast as the Fuji XPro2.  X Pro 2 has better autofocus than a DSLR.  First mirrorless camera that has even come CLOSE to that.  Testing with kids.
  • The Fuji 10-24 is the bane of my existence.  Not on lens roadmap.  Blow drying in hotel.
  • SOOOO many landscapes are missing the “soul” of the shot.  Include a person, a boat, a cactus, a rock, whatever.
  • A wet lens ruined two of my favorite compositions

Nick:

Slowing down, and getting accustomed to more time for the shot

Less is more.. I only used two lenses

Pack your coat in your carryon

Nick :  Why every photographer should visit iceland at least once

  • The light
    • The light lasts forever this time of year.. Forget about golden hour.. Its more like golden three hour, and the sunsets last forever giving you more time for compositions
    • The sky is always changing.. Sometimes for the better, sometimes to crush your hopes but it keeps you on your toes and is fun to shoot in.
  • The people
    • Everyone speaks english and is very friendly and helpful, they are used to dealing with lost americans
  • The subjects
    • The island is just packed with photogenic mountain peaks, glaciers, icebergs and even raindier

  1. Great podcast! You started to go down the road of telling a story with your photo when you were talking about having a subject for scale. I think the thing I find hard is the story telling aspect of capturing an image. I think that some good discussion on this would be a great thing to include in an episode of this podcast.

  2. Was just listening to the Podcast and was interested to hear that you said the Doodads of the week page is still active. I’d just about given up on it, since the last post on the page (that I can see) is from March 24th.

I’ve checked on several computers, on several ISPs and in multiple browsers. Just thought you might want to know.

  3. Enjoyed the podcast. I’ll have to put Iceland on my bucket list, but we are going on a trip with many waterfalls this summer, so some of this podcast will be applicable for that.

  4. Nice Ep Jim and Nick!

I’m heading to NZ in a couple of weeks and was thinking what gear I should pack. I know there will be a some hiking involved so I really need to limit the equipment. After listening to this episode I will take Nick’s advice on taking only a couple of lenses. (Maybe 4 😉 )

Thanks for the interesting and informative content.

(Heading to Iceland in September so that really got me excited!)

  5. I am planning a road trip around the scottish coast – 7 to 8 days long, so a lot of landscapes, waterfall, coastal and night photography to look forward to.

  6. Great podcast as always. It’s a bummer to hear that Fuji didn’t weather seal the 10-24. Hopefully they will fix that in the next version.

  7. Hey guys! What waterproof clothing items/accessories do you wear at the beach to keep you feet and legs warm?

    Can you please reply back!

    Thank you in advance.

    Aaron

  8. Thanks for being so honest about your mistakes on the trip. Really enjoyed hearing what you learned and that you don’t get a perfect shot with every click.

  9. I’d love to try out the Thinguma! And your experience with the lack of weather sealing on the wide angle lens made me think twice about purchasing an old Nikon 17-35 2.8 lens. Weather sealing is definitely important in a wide angle above other lenses. Thanks for the podcast!

  10. I NO LONGER LISTEN TO THE IMPROVE PHOTOGRAPHY PODCAST … Now I’m watching it on YouTube and it’s now just that much better! Keep up the great work.

  11. Love the podcast!
This is the first group that I have joined.
I just recently joined the plus group!

  12. After hearing about the Xpro2 and it’s focusing prowess I thought maybe it would work for sports? Faster than a DSLR, really? Or maybe just in certain situations…

The viewfinder would be great for trying to follow fast moving sports like lacrosse. Zoomed in it’s tough to see much of what’s going on in the game so I have to choose between actually watching the game or following the ball or a player to get good shots.

I’ve tried keeping both eyes open but I can’t seem to get my brain to see that way, and it doesn’t work at all if the action I want to track is on the right side, moving left. WhenI’m looking into the viewfinder with the right eye the camera and lens blocks my left eye from seeing anything to the right.

A quick peek at DP Reviews says the focus performance is very lens dependent and struggles for speed with longer lenses.

I currently shoot with a 7D Mark II, any chance there is a hotshot mount viewfinder doohickey I could use with it? I like the idea of being able to zoom in but see more around the spot I’m zoomed in on.

  13. Oh man, I just bought that Fuji lens that Jim was talking about. I haven’t had any trouble with it, but I do live in Oregon – it’s likely to get damp at some point.
