Follow Jim Harmer’s Mystery Trip 2017

Several months ago, Jim asked me to come up with a Mystery trip location.   I booked him a flight to a different country without telling him where he's going.  I had to keep a poker face while recording a podcast with him a few weeks ago.  His wife, Emily, also had a tough time keeping it a secret but she never gave any hints.

Today he got to the airport with a manilla envelope I'd prepared for him with his flight details.  He read his ticket information to find out where he is going (he was SUPER excited!).

Each day, Jim will send me a photo that I'll post here with a cryptic clue as to where he is photographing this week.  Post your comments and thoughts and anything you notice in the photos right in the comments and we'll see how long it takes us to figure it out!

He's using a beta copy of the Really Good Photo Spots app to find his spots, and is recording a series of videos for the Improve Photography Youtube channel which will be released after the trip.

  1. This is awesome Jesse! I won’t spill the secret, but I don’t know how you managed to keep it. I also have no idea how you handled planning all this without getting to go on all the stuff you planned. Guess you are used to it by now. I’ll volunteer to renegotiate your employment contract and include doing a trip like this each year and you get to tag along for your annual bonus!

    1. By the looks of it, if I had to guess I would venture to say that this is a Norwegian Fiord.

  2. Looking forward to finding out the destination and the details. I’m sure it will be quite entertaining!

  3. Hmm… Difficult to research from here in South Africa, but from what I can make out, there are no international flights from Boise, ID, only domestic ones… So that image must have been taken from the second flight that could have originated anywhere from Chicago to Spokane!

  4. All we can say for sure is it is not north America. We do not know where is started from (flight 2 of 3). Flight 2 could have originated in Seattle, Denver…. 9:38 puts him on another continent or an island, but it is only a stop over to the final destination. The game is on. Thanks Jesse

        1. oops put my comment on your comment Laryssa,,,, i was wondering las t night where the clue was too lol

  5. This is so exciting!
My first guess is going to be Italy.
I am looking forward to the rest of the teaser photos!

  6. Andrew Christmann

Are those GPS coordinates in the file name? If so, -1.92 x 101.54 puts him very close to Lake Kerinci in Indonesia.

      1. He took three flights, and the second one was at least 9 hours. We have no way of knowing how long he was airborne before snapping that shot of the flight tracker.
