A Creative Tip for Finding New Photography Locations

where can I shoot?
Cool photography location

Sometimes it can be difficult and disappointing when you have a free morning to go shoot photography, but you can't think of anywhere new to shoot.  I run into that problem all the time, but I thought of a fun way for photographers to find new places to shoot.

If you haven't heard of geocaching before, it is a world-wide treasure hunt happening right now in cities around the globe.  Geocachers hide little boxes with something in it, publicize the GPS coordinates of the location, and then let others find the “treasure”, replace the prize with a new prize of their own, and then re-hide the box.  There are literally millions of public and free geocaches hidden in public places around the world.  You can find the locations near you by going to the Geocaching website.

What does this have to do with photography?  Simple.  I have gone to quite a few geocaches, and they always seem to be hidden in creative and fun locations.  In my home town in Idaho, I was introduced to some incredible little spots in the city that I would never have found if I hadn't been guided there by a geocacher.  I found waterfalls that I didn't know were in my city, beautiful little hidden parks, caves, etc.

When you go to the geocaching website, you can type in your zip code and get a free list of geocaching locations near you that you can print off and then follow a GPS (you can use the GPS for your car, or you can use your cell phone) to find the location.

This is a fun way to find new and creative places to do photography in your city.  I thought it was a tip worth sharing.

  1. That would be a great idea just for photographers. Someone should build a website and when someone finds a great location for a shoot they can put in the GPS coordinates. You go to the site when you want to shoot and put in a zipcode and get a list of places to shoot. I am surprised it hasn’t been done already.

  2. Have to agree – a Geocache Website of Photographed spots would be awesome. This is a hard spot for me, and finding abandon barns, buildings, creeks, etc. via the help of other photographers would be awesome.

  3. Pro4Pro has a locations tab on their app and website. It has a geolocation feature and shows location by mileage from the user’s location.

    1. why a dangerous idea for women, why not a dangerous idea for men? do you consider all women weak or not survivalists? if so I’m sorry for you.

  4. Great post! I used to face this issue too .. we started a company to help photographers with this.

Check out pashadelic.com which has all photos with locations and map tools to help predict sun/moon position..

I’m working on it myself so you can give me direct feedback of things you’d love to see on it. It’s free so go for it! http://www.pashadelic.com
